The diamonds we know and love are substances made of carbon with a crystal structure. To most people, diamonds are thought to be formed hundreds of feet underground, however in the world of 2018, this is no longer always the case. It’s true, natural diamonds are formed deep inside the earth at high temperatures and extreme pressure; and because they are formed naturally, the natural diamonds we see in jewelry today are actually billions of years old. However, in today’s society, synthetic diamonds have come to exist and are being produced more and more by the day. Unlike natural diamonds, synthetic diamonds are created in a laboratory using technology to mimic the natural high pressure and temperature environment that births natural diamonds. This process makes it impossible to tell a natural diamond from a synthetic one without machinery, and even with the proper machinery it proves difficult to tell the difference. A lot of people incorrectly believe that synthetic diamonds are fake, however, this is not necessarily true. Although synthetic diamonds are not formed in a natural environment, they have the same chemical composition, physical properties, and appearance as natural diamonds. On top of this, choosing a synthetic diamond can save you a ton of money in the buying process.
So why go with a natural diamond? Well, this is a question commonly asked by diamond connoisseurs throughout the world. In our opinion, a diamond tells a story. Knowing that your diamond sat underground for so many years makes it so much more special, and we like to embrace that concept at The Karat Shop. Yes, a diamond is a diamond; synthetic and natural diamonds look the same and have the same chemical structure, but in our opinion, knowing that your diamond is one in a billion and potentially sat underground for billions of years makes it well worth the price difference.
